In the world of theater, there occasionally emerges a character that inevitably captivates attention – a character who decides to share their wisdom of business and seduction with the world. This character is the Gigolo, the central figure in the play "Gigolo Ltd.", which is currently captivating theater stages throughout Slovenia. In conversation with actor Domen Valič, who portrays this alluring and intriguing character, we will delve into how he prepared for the role, his understanding of the Gigolo, and the process of crafting the visual appearance that contributes to the overall impression of the play.
As we already know him from many successful Slovenian series such as "Usodno Vino", "Ja, Chef", "Reka Ljubezni", and many others, we now get to know him as the Gigolo on theater stages. He presents himself to us in a monologue, written by his friend Matej Mijatović.
In Domen's words - who is the Gigolo?
"The Gigolo is a businessman, a lover, a poet; he can be anything you want him to be, as long as you pay him."
After the playful introduction, Domen Valič continued: "The Gigolo must be a character who slightly annoys people, yet intrigues and appeals to them at the same time. The audience should want to hear more from him, even if they may not agree with him." This was a crucial element in shaping the character. "I wanted to create a character that would be provocative yet attractive, something that would excite the audience and encourage them to want to learn more." Throughout the entire performance, Gigolo maintains a balance between being irritating and appealing, which is crucial for the character to come alive and connect with the audience. Such an approach to character development adds depth and complexity to the performance, as it creates an intriguing dynamic between the character and the audience.

Incorporating improvisation:
"I incorporate improvisation very rarely. In my opinion, the script is so well-written and flows so smoothly that there's no need for it; improvisation only disrupts the flow," he emphasized, adding that he only uses it for some light banter with the audience.
Designing the visual appearance:
During his visit to the festival, he drew inspiration from a British star who wore shiny blue trousers. Stylistically, along with photographer Urša Premik, he connected this inspiration with Magnifico and Harry Styles. The idea for the final costume emerged during a visit to Svet Metraže, where they encountered blue satin and purple backgrounds. Together with stylist Alenka Birk, they then selected the silhouette.

"We were considering how far we wanted to go with the oversized 80s look, but regardless, we had to be careful not to overdo the '80s scene. It was important for us to satisfy a wide range of people, not limit my movement on stage, and consider that this is a show seen through people's eyes, not through different perspectives."
He also added, "I wanted mystery and some bling in the appearance, I wanted it to be sexy and involving a lot of jewelry," which the audience can easily notice on stage.
How do you maintain freshness after so many performances?
In short, he said: "I seek it. When the performances are consecutive, I sometimes catch myself talking in a melody and immediately think how I could say in a different way. But I don't have a specific trick; I tell myself, 'Come on, Domen, speak the thought, what exactly is the thought of this sentence."
Message:
The main message that Gigolo aims to convey is about the art of love and relationships. Domen Valič shares:
"The art of love isn't that difficult; you just need to understand women and realize that they're not supposed to be understood. You need to be resourceful."
With these words, he highlights the complexity and challenges of romantic relationships, emphasizing the importance of understanding and accepting one's partner. Gigolo aims to educate men on how to behave towards women and how to act in romantic situations. He underscores that love is a fragile, unexpected thing, and as long as we deceive ourselves, we cannot progress in relationships. This message is reflected in the play and serves as a foundation for contemplating the complexity of love and interpersonal relationships.
