In the realm of tattoo artistry, where creativity meets the human canvas, Lee Sang-Jin known as POLYC stands as a luminary figure, weaving stories and emotions into every stroke. Hailing from South Korea, POLYC has not only witnessed the evolution of tattoos in society but has also played a pivotal role in reshaping perceptions. He graciously shared his insights, with us, on the evolving perception of tattoos, his unique artistic journey, and his notable experiences, including collaborating with global K-pop sensations like BTS.
From Stigma to Artistic Expression
POLYC acknowledges the evolving perception of tattoos in Korean society. In Korean culture, tattoos were often associated with gang members, as they were commonly used as a way for gangs to identify themselves. But tattoos are now celebrated as a form of art and self-expression. Influenced by the younger generation and the presence of tattoos among K-pop idols, the narrative around body ink has shifted from taboo to trendsetting. He shares “Nowadays, there are a lot of adults who look at it without a negative perspective as long as it's not too scary. I personally never felt discriminated against because of my tattoos.”
Artistic Inspirations: Matisse's Influence on Style
The influence of Matisse on POLYC's artistic style resonates not only in his tattoos but also in his broader artistic expressions. Matisse's paper art, known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs, finds a parallel in the dynamic and visually striking tattoos that POLYC creates. This fusion of inspiration is akin to a fashion designer drawing inspiration from a particular art movement to create a unique collection.
Collaboration with BTS
Reflecting on his own journey as a fan, POLYC recognizes the depth of passion and love that fans invest in their idols. As an adult, he understands the profound connection fans share, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences. Navigating the pressure of working with global icons like Jimin and Jungkook from BTS, POLYC acknowledges the stress but finds solace in the prior communication that lessens the burden. The experience becomes not just a professional collaboration but a personal journey with these artists. When asked about his most memorable work he responded:
“I have a lot of works that are memorable, but I think the number one is a BTS tattoo. All the members are big celebrities, but I was surprised by their humanity, and listening to their life stories were such a great experience in my life.”
He also shares personal favourites among his own tattoos, especially cherishing the one on his neck done by his influential friend @yuuztattoo on instagram. He shares “The tattoo on my neck became my trademark.”
The Dynamic Canvas: Tattoos as Wearable Art
POLYC's description of the human body as a dynamic canvas brings to mind the parallels between tattoo art and fashion. Both mediums share the common ground of being wearable expressions of creativity, with tattoos acting as a permanent and personalized accessory that moves and evolves with the individual.

Covering Up and Customization: Akin to Wardrobe Choices
The parallels between cover-up tattoos and fashion choices are striking. Just as individuals seek to correct or enhance their style through clothing, cover-up requests in tattooing often stem from a desire to refine and personalize one's self-expression. POLYC's emphasis on scar cover-ups adds an extra layer, turning scars into a form of embellishment, much like a well-chosen accessory can enhance an outfit.
Tattoos as Collaborative Fashion Pieces
POLYC's acknowledgment of collaboration with clients as a core aspect of his work parallels the collaborative nature of fashion design. Just as a designer collaborates with clients to create custom pieces, POLYC works with individuals to craft unique, wearable art that resonates with personal stories.
" It’s not easy to get people to like my paintings and have them tattooed on their bodies, but it's more like a collaboration between me and the customer because we talk and create the design together. "
Our Experience
